The Melodious Accord

3/26/2005

The thing is...

I sat down at my computer today intending to compose a post about things that I hate (which doesn’t seem like a very positive exercise) when I discovered that my dear friend Matt Clack has just posted something on the same topic, except that he focused more on the things that he loves. So, it seems even more appropriate now for me to share my hates, although I will temper it with a few of my loves. And everyone should check out Matt’s post as well, if you haven’t already. Maybe those interested could comment about their loves on his blog, and their hates on mine.

This is making my blog sound a little like the evil twin of the two.

My desire to share my hates does not come out of the blue, I’ll have you know. A few days ago my boss (who is abandoning me to go on sabbatical as of the day after tomorrow) stuck his finger in my ear during a Child Protection Policy training meeting and a had a hell of a hard time keeping it together and not making a scene. And lets be honest, I made a bit of a scene. I could still feel his finger in my ear for about half an hour. This is all because I happen to have a thing about people touching my ears, or, especially, sticking anything in them. It makes me physically sick. As I was sitting in that meeting pouting about how violated I felt, I remembered a conversation I had with Tracy once where I’d said, “I just have this thing about ____” and she said, “well, Melody, you just have so many ‘things’; it’s too hard to keep up.” So, I thought I’d set the record straight and just make public a list of my ‘things’, though I doubt that it will be totally comprehensive. So, here they are:

The Things I Hate
1. People inserting things into/touching my ears.
2. Hippopotamuses
3. Barnacles
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
4. Things that are porous.
5. When people don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
6. Men/boys wearing denim shorts (unless they are old men, at which point it doesn’t seem to matter.)
7. When boys try to hit on girls while in another car sitting at a stoplight.
8. Fungi of any variety.
9. When children pick their noses.
10. Blatant disregard for appropriate grammar.
11. When I ask a sales associate for something and they respond by saying something like “Oh, I’m all out of that right now but I expect a new shipment in this weekend” as if he/she and the store are one and the same. Especially at places like Garden Ridge or cell phone stores.
12. Bad/cheesy poetry.
13. Bill Paxton.

I should really stop there, not because I’ve listed everything I hate, but because I’m beginning to get annoyed thinking about all these things.

The Things I Love
1. Really good poetry.
2. Waking up and realizing that I still have three more hours to sleep.
3. Hanging out with someone and being comfortable with not talking.
4. Accoustic guitar.
5. Sitting outside at night in the summer when it’s humid, or sultry, if you will, and eating fudgecicles.
6. Hiding. Like not necessarily when someone is looking for me, but sitting in my closet or something and thinking, ‘if anyone came in my room right now, they wouldn’t know I’m here.’
7. Chinese food.
8. Reading books out loud with my brothers and sister, and a select few others.
9. Watching movies with people who love movies a much as I do. (And with my siblings.)
10. Singing along with the radio really loudly in my car. When I’m alone. Of course.

And of course, that’s not all my loves, but it’s a start. If I name too many more, I’ll begin to feel vulnerable (which maybe should have been on the ‘hates’ list.)

What are yours?

So how do you like my new blogger name? Maybe it doesn't count since I don't really have a blog of my own. Maybe I would if I liked to write, but since I don't...

So who is this Michael Rice guy anyway? Is he stalking you via cyberspace? Do I need to send Art to have a talk with him?

    Happy Easter!!!

this is what I find disturbing:
my mom and I have all the same loves and hates. I agree with all of them. I don't know why that mispronunciation thing wasn't on my list; it always sends me into a rage. except i've never been scuba diving. because she's never taken me.

and michael, well, he's a friend of a friend who's becoming just a friend to the first degree, and he's really good friends with Ian's sister, and I find him amusing.

    and seaberg: ah, the memories

Thanks Melody! I liked this little exercise.

Here are my hate and love lists. I'll go with the hate one first, just to get it out the way.

Things i hate (in no particular order)

    1. Mushrooms.

    2. Head lice. Ugh! Actually, make that all parasites.

    3. Scratching paper. This would definitely stay near the top, if this was in a particular order.

    4. I'll use this space for the usual hates. Death, murder, illness, feeling like a worthless piece of sh*t, hating yourself, regret, guit, shame, etc.

    5. When i'm are relaxing in a bubbley bath, and all of a sudden i start to imagine each bubble is a huge spot or some sort. I'm not sure if it's a normal thing to imagine, but that really grosses me out.

    6. Mr Downie's 'disappointed' look.

    7. People telling me what to do. Yes, i'm stubborn.

    8. People around me being unhappy.

    9. Not being able to help, no matter how much i want to.

    10. That itch on your back that you can't reach, and when you finally manage, scratching just doesn't work.

    11. My nails. They are so flimsy, and every now and again they will decide to go see-through. They also like to separate into different layers.

    12. The feeling of having dry skin, especially on my hands and lips.

    13. Stepping out of a warm bed, or a warm shower, into the cold.

    14. Nastyness, just for the sake of being nasty.

    15. The feeling of having un-brushed teeth.

    16. Lack of sleep. Actually, it's the feeling of exhaustion and knowing that i won't be able to have a proper sleep for a week that i hate.

    17. I also have to agree with Melody, for the fungi and barnacles. Don't they just give you the shivers? Barnacles remind me of smallpox.

    18. Smallpox. I saw a picture of it for the first time the other day, and it was horrific. Never search 'smallpox' in google images, and certainly never view the first image at it's original size...

    19. Being allergic to all animals with fur. It sucks!

    20. Not knowing.

Here is my long list of things i love (again, in no particular order).

    1. Lying in bed listening to music, with my curtains closed, light off but with my net of fairy lights on my ceiling turned on.

    2. Receiving letters from my friends.

    3. Giving and getting hugs and kisses.

    4. Spending time with my big sister, Keri.

    5. Laughing hysterically and wondering if i’ll ever be able to stop.

    6. Reading the new Harry Potter book late into the night, and not being able to put it down.

    7. Playing ‘spy’ with my cousin Rachel when we were younger.

    8. Climbing the trees in my old front garden with Kirsty, my best friend at the time.

    9. When my whole family and all my friends in our old street, would come to our living room in
our old house, during a lightning storm, and watch out of our giant window because we had an amazing view and could see for miles.

    10. Lying in bed after a warm bubbly bath, with an immaculate bedroom, newly washed bedding, the electric blanket on, while there is a storm outside and knowing you are safe.

    11. Going on a walk or bike ride, and taking the time to appreciate nature.

    12. Collapsing after a run that you had to force yourself to do.

    13. Looking at photographs.

    14. Remembering old times, and knowing there are still great times to come.

    15. On Christmas Eve, lying in bed on the bottom bunk, with Keri above me. Keri telling me stories of when she heard bells, the sound of hooves and a sleigh landing on our roof, and seeing reindeers’ hoof prints, and me believing them and being certain that Santa exists.

    16. Feeling loved.

    17. Seeing friends i haven’t seen in ages, and discovering that they haven’t changed one bit. I experienced this on Thursday!

    18. Getting excited over a hot guy… Also experienced this on Thursday.

    19. Being told, from a reliable friend, that one of their friends (unfortunately not the same hot guy as mentioned above) thinks I am 'fine', or, having a guy pay attention to me… Thursday again.

    20. Having a deep and meaningful conversation with someone (strangely enough, often with my brother, Kieran), and feeling at the end of it that we are closer or have a better understanding of each other.

    21. Wearing my pyjamas.

    22. Singing extremely loudly, and dancing crazily, with someone who doesn’t care how stupid we look or how bad we sound.

    23. A long phone call with a friend.

    24. Waking up in the morning after a deep sleep, and feeling completely refreshed.

    25. Understanding maths that no one else, or very few others can.

    26. A period of craft and design with Jack and Mr Downie both present. Oh the hilarity! Actually, this would be at number
1 if there were a specific order.

    27. Getting high on coffee and/or sugar.

    28. Finally making it onto the roof in the sports hall, at the cell sleepover.

    29. Playing nukemball at the cell sleepover. Oh, or even strip nukemball at S.U. camp.

    30. Leaving a school Christmas disco and feeling relieved that, instead of having no dancing partner like I was dreading, I actually danced with a selection of decent guys.

    31. The last day of school before the summer holidays. Listening to music, eating chocolate and drawing on the blackboard in English, then visiting friends in the music department when we are supposed to be in German.

    32. Being told nice stories of when you were younger, that you thought you had forgotten, but realising you still remember them.

    33. Being told I look pretty, I look like I have lost weight, or any other compliment. Despite them being completely unbelievable, it still feels good.

    34. Nice gestures, no matter how subtle.

    35. Feeling completely content with myself, my surroundings and with other people.

    36. Spending money!

    37. Being paid/having money.

    38. Winning at sports. Of course I’m not competitive.

    39. Being completely open with a friend, and not getting a negative reaction like I had worried about.

    40. Feeling close to God.

    41. Knowing God loves me unconditionally.

    42. Watching a really good film at the cinema with my parents.

    43. Doing forward or backwards rolls over the seats in the cinema with friends.

    44. Discovering that someone remembers you after almost 5 years. Or even 9 years in Robin’s case. I was impressed!

    45. Feeling important.

    46. Watching Melody pull down her jeans to show us an impressive bruise on her leg, and realising she is standing in front of a window looking into a room full of 15 year old boys. Sorry Melody, but I couldn’t not mention it!

    47. My friends. Every single one of them!

    48. My friends throwing me the best surprise party EVER!

    49. An adrenalin rush. For example, when you are sitting on Oblivion at Alton Towers, just waiting for the drop.

    50. Spending two hours online, despite being banned from the computer and grounded, because Mum was stupid and went to bed without hiding the computer mouse like she was pathetic enough to do last night.

Well done if you actually read it all.

I cannnot believe you had a list of 50 loves. You're a little bit crazy. And what's scratching paper?

  • At 6:14 PM, Anonymous Ailsa said…

Scratching paper is just as it sounds. Like scraping your nails down a book or something. I just can't stand the feel of it.

Sorry, but i actually have even more loves and hates to add to the lists...

    More things i hate
    21. Things out of order, or messy (my bedroom is an exception). An example would be at cell group when i start tidying the tassles on the rug. Also, my last comment's layout is all over the place and it's really annoying me.
    22. Things being uneven. If i have an itchy knee then i have to scratch both knees just to make it even.
    23. Change. I'm actually alright with change, but i noticed today i do my best to avoid it. I always take 7 squirts of shower gel/shampoo/conditioner from our dispenser and it has just always been that way. Also, i always use locker 15 at my gym, and always use the same shower there.
    24. People continuing to sniff, even after refusing the offer of a tissue.
    25. Having wet feet. When it rains, i don't actually care about my hair getting wet (although it ends up an even bigger mess than it already was), but i despise the feeling of having wet feet.

And some more things i love
    51. When it's sunny, starts to feel like summer and everyone in my street comes out for a water fight.
    52. Snow on Christmas day.
    53. Rubber gloves, especially my pink ones!
    54. Mildred and Myrtle; my gorgeous gerbils.
    55. Watching 'Robots' at the cinema with Liza and her family. Liza's amazing, and the film's really funny and definitely worth seeing.

Michele and I could talk, or not talk, forever and still find things to not talk about.

According to your hate list, I regularly offend you with numbers 4,5,6,9,10,12, and, even though I have no idea who Bill Paxton is, probably 13 too.
